Paper Craft - Yu Jordy Fu.

Yu Jordy Fu is a Chinese artist, educated in England. She has made what is called a collection of 'Cloud Lamps'. These are what appears to be paper lamp shades, they are detailed in design, often having repeating patterns. Her work also translates into large scale installations. I like the use of lighting in these theatrical, almost chandelier-like creations.

Paper Craft - Mark Fox.

Mark Fox caught my eye, as he takes paper craft and produces work on a much grander scale than other artists. He is an abstract drawer, who draws with paint and paper.

Paper Craft - Ingrid Siliakus.

Ingrid Siliakus uses paper to create intricate three-dimensional sculptures. Some fold out from books, whereas other pieces are hanging sculptures illuminated by lamps. She names herself a 'paper-architect' as well as an artist, which is evident in her angular work which reminds the viewer of medieval castles and detailed gothic architecture.

Paper Craft - Javan Ivey.

An artist who uses just white paper specifically, Javan Ivey uses built up layers to create an interest of three dimensions in his work. Free from any colour, his work depends on forms and silhouettes to create textural elements.

Louis-David Saugy and Paper Cuts.

Born the same year Hauswirth died, in 1871, Louis-David Saugy also lived in Pays-d'Enhaut and practised the art of paper cuts. Saugy trained as an apprentice carpenter, worked as a postman, then retired early to concentrate on his beloved activity of cutting paper. He exhibited work in Geneva; wealthy admirers bought pieces and many are in private collections. Saugy's work involves story telling, a narrative of everyday life in Pays-d'enhaut. He uses imagery to describe his surroundings, each paper cut would be of an event; dancing, tree-felling, butchers. An overall feeling of joy within the world he lived in, encompasses his work.

Johann-Jakob Hauswirth and Paper Cuts.

In Switzerland, there is a small museum which exhibits paper cut work by two paper-collage artists; Johann-Jakob Hauswirth and Louis-David Saugy. The museum lies in the valley of Pays-d’Enhaut, a hard to reach, secluded spot which specialises in producing milk, cheese, livestock and timber. The flowers and botanical life as well as mountain and farm animals inspired the artists to create detailed paper cuts.

When Johann-Jakob Hauswirth was born in 1808, silhouettes were fashionable, as many portraits were made from dark paper cut into profile. However, it may have been purely coincidental as there was very little contact from outside the valley. He lived until 1871 and throughout his life he was a crafts-man; illiterate, he used practical skills for his daytime jobs as a farm labourer or charcoal burner and his leisurely activity of paper cuts. He was born in the German speaking Saanenthal before moving to the French speaking Pays-d’Enhaut when he was young. And there he lived alone in a hut he built himself. Little is known about him, or why this woodman would take up this activity in the later years of his life and become so skilful. Some critics and historians say that Hauswirth is not an illustrator, but his work is symbolic of ideas, such as a harmonious and perfect world, his work can be seen as poetic. Heart shapes dominate some pieces which everyone understands as a universal language for love, union and affection.

Paper Craft: Design and Art with Paper.

In the library I found a great book on paper craft, and it had hundreds of artists who specialise in using paper.

One of my favourite featured artists was Bovey Lee. Born in Hong Kong, she mixes influences and inspirations from both Asia and the West. At first glance, it appears her work is based on the mythical but that is merely her style; she uses modern subject matter and merges this with a beautiful paper cutting technique.
